Window Styles Explained: Awning, Sliding, Casement, Double-Hung & More
Awning, sliding, casement, double-hung, louvre, fixed and sashless — what each window style does best and where to use it in a Melbourne home.
Choosing windows is not just frame material and glass — the opening style shapes ventilation, views, cleaning and how a room feels. Here is a plain-English guide to the main aluminium window styles and where each works best.
Awning windows
Top-hinged, opening outward from the bottom. They can stay open in light rain, offer great security and ventilation control, and suit kitchens, bathrooms and high wall positions. One of the most popular styles in modern Melbourne homes.
Sliding windows
Panels slide horizontally on a track. Simple, reliable, no protrusion into the room or outside — ideal for walkways, along decks and wherever swing space is tight.
Casement windows
Side-hinged, opening outward like a door. They catch breezes well and seal tightly when closed, making them strong performers for both ventilation and energy efficiency.
Double-hung windows
Two sashes that slide vertically. The classic period look — perfect for heritage, Federation and Californian bungalow facades where you want authenticity with modern aluminium performance.
Louvre windows
Horizontal glass blades that pivot together for maximum adjustable ventilation. Great for cross-flow ventilation, stairwells and warm-climate living, often paired with security screens.
Fixed and sashless windows
- Fixed windows: do not open — maximum glass, minimum frame, lowest cost per opening, best for views and light where ventilation is not needed
- Sashless (sliding) windows: overlapping sliding sashes with minimal framing for a clean, uninterrupted look
Every style is fabricated to measure in our Melbourne workshop, in single or double glazing and the full powder-coat range. Book a free measure and we will recommend the best configuration for each opening in your home.
